After School Art Workshops for children aged 6-11years (Primary KS1 & 2)
Our workshops will give primary school aged children further opportunities to develop their art education in a dedicated studio space. They will learn about contemporary art, experiment with a range of specialist media and techniques, engage with exciting ideas and take part in community exhibitions showcasing their work. We offer a weekly session aimed at younger students between the ages of 6 and 8 and two sessions per week for students aged 9-11.
The "I can't draw" problem
Young children draw freely without caring about the outcome, just happy to make things and express themselves through experimentation and discovery. The concept of "I can't draw" is a learnt one and one that we have battled against consistently in our careers as teachers and as parents. Children learn to be anxious about what their work looks like or what other people will think and to place more value on drawings that 'look' like something. This can stunt creativity and create a barrier to being truly creative and expressive.
The reality is that drawing is simply creating a mark on a surface and anybody and everybody can do that. Additionally, drawing is only one aspect of art and there are endless different media to try out. As teachers we have looked to develop confidence in our students to find their own personal strengths and successes, encouraging value placed in experimentation and development of ideas as well as skill.
